Walter W. Smith, Jr.'s Obituary
Walter Watkins Smith, Jr. passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at age 88.
Beloved husband of Ethel Mae “Mamie” Landry Smith. Loving father of James Nowlin Smith (Jill) of Tampa, FL, Walter Landry Smith (Janet) of Baton Rouge, LA and Louis Byrd Smith (Marianne) of Medford, OR. Son of the late Ellen Nowlin Smith and Walter W. Smith. Grandfather of Nicholas F. Smith, Adam L. Smith, Rosemary H. Smith, Meredeth E. Smith, Erica N. Smith, Jason J. Smith and Justin D. Smith.
He was a native of Lynchburg, VA, a resident of Metairie, LA for 37 years, and Mandeville, LA for the last 20 years. He was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant in World War II, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He became a deck officer in the merchant marines for 26 years, before retiring from the sea to participate in the raising of his three sons. He became a ferry boat pilot on the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area at the Canal St, Jackson Avenue and Chalmette ferries. He remained devoted until his death to his wife of 65 years, whom he met at the Naval Station in New Orleans during the war.
Relatives and friends are invited to the memorial services at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Monday, October 10, 2011at 11:00 AM with visitation on Monday from 9:00 AM until service time.
