Family visitation will begin at 9 a.m. in the church sanctuary; public visitation begins at 10 a.m. Burial will follow services at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
Spike was a devoted and committed Christian, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born Nov. 20, 1946 in Alexandria, LA, Spike was raised in Baton Rouge. He was an all-state athlete in football, baseball and track at Baton Rouge High School, where he met his lifelong love, Della. Spike lettered in football at Louisiana State University, helping the Tigers win the 1966 Cotton Bowl. He later played professional baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league system and was an avid outdoorsman with a fondness for dove hunting. He was also a state-ranked amateur tennis player and loved to play golf.
Spike spent most of his career in sales and sales management for the Maytag Company, working in Lafayette, New Orleans and elsewhere before moving to St. Tammany Parish and starting his own business which thrives today. His life was extraordinary, and we were extraordinarily blessed to know him.
Spike is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Della Melton Pierce; two sons: Walter D. Pierce IV and wife, Mary, of Lafayette; George Bradford Pierce and wife, Kim, of Mandeville; a daughter, Laura Pierce Battistella and husband, Rion, of Covington; four grandchildren: Emma, Amelia, Ezra and Madeleine Pierce; his mother, Margaret Hunt Pierce; a brother, Carl Hunt Pierce and wife, Blinda; two sisters: Jane Bradford and husband, Don, and Merriann Hornsby and husband, Scott; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter DeVane Pierce II. In lieu of flowers, donations in Spike's memory may be made to Covington Presbyterian Church, 222 S. Jefferson St, Covington, LA and/or the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, 441 North I-10 Service Road, Metairie, LA 70006.
