Sidney Nicolle Carruth's Obituary
Sidney Nicolle Carruth, a devoted wife, mother and community volunteer died Sunday November 19, 2017 of heart failure at her home in Covington, LA. She was 98. She was predeceased by her husband, Julian Reade Carruth who died in 2006.
Mrs. Carruth was born and raised in Covington, LA until her graduation from Covington High School when she enrolled at LSU. She graduated from LSU in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
At LSU she was President of Alpha Delta Pi women’s sorority and president of the Panhellenic Council. Upon graduation she was employed by LSU in the Auditor’s Office. She married Julian R. Carruth in 1947 and moved to Shreveport, LA.
In 1958, they established Carruth Mortgage Corporation in New Orleans. After the company was sold to Mellon Bank Corp. in 1973, she continued to operate the Republic Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1983.
She was the first woman to be awarded the designation of Master Mortgage Banker from the National Mortgage Banking Association. She was active in both the New Orleans Mortgage Banking Association and the Louisiana Mortgage Banking Association.
Carruth Mortgage Corporation financed thousands of homes in the New Orleans area.
Mrs. Carruth, along with her husband Julian, was a lifelong supporter of LSU and the recipient of the LSU Alumni Purple and Gold Award (1999), the LSU Foundation’s President’s Award and in 2001 they were the first couple to be inducted into the LSU College of Business Hall of Distinction.
She served on the City Park Board of Commissioners and was an active member of the Friends of City Park for many years serving as Chief Financial Officer and President. She was also an active member of the Orleans Club, Le Petit Salon, the New Orleans Garden Society and Cancer Crusaders.
Mrs. Carruth was exceedingly generous with her knowledge, experience, and resources. She mentored many individuals, helping them navigate challenging stages of their lives. She also was an avid quilter and loyal friend to many.
For many years Mrs. Carruth was active in Gentilly Methodist Church. Later in life she served on the Session of Oak Park Presbyterian Church opening her home and heart to benefit youth activities. She was a faithful supporter of First Baptist Church of Covington and St. Timothy on the North Shore United Methodist Church.
She was devoted to her husband of 59 years, Julian Reade Carruth with whom she built a rewarding life and successful business. Survivors include one son, Gurucharan Khalsa (Carolyn) Upland, CA; two daughters, Susan Kennon Carruth Ryan (Dennis) of Covington, LA; and Mary Kent Carruth of Austin Texas; a brother-in-law Philip Lindsay Carruth and sister-in-law Edwina Whitman Carruth; four grandchildren, Siri Khalsa Carruth of Austin TX, David Carruth Hulett, of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Satkirtan Carruth McLafferty of Denver, CO and Kennon Hulett Krugman of Brooklyn, NY. and four Great-grandchildren; Narain, Giaan, Kiran and Simran Carruth.
Visitation will be held at Christwood Retirement Center, 100 Christwood Blvd, Covington, La in the Garden Room at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 25, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2:30 pm
