Shirley Stewart Falkenstein's Obituary
Shirley Falkenstein died on Tuesday, August 26 of natural causes at the age of 79.
She was born on December 11, 1928 in Colombia, South America to Fay Whaley and Chester A. Stewart. She was married to the late Adam J. Falkenstein and is survived by her sister Lois Stout, her four children Lynn Fresh, Barbara Gennusa, Bruce Falkenstein and Jeff Falkenstein, and 9 grandchildren.
Shirley spent the early years of her marriage assisting her husband in the management of the A.J. Falkenstein Bakery on Cohn St. in New Orleans. After spending several years in Airline Park, Shirley and her family moved to Covington in 1959. She was well known in the community for various roles that she served. In the sixties, she was Parents’ Club president for St. Peter’s School and SSA, and owner and operator of the Auto-Lec store on Columbia St. In the seventies and early eighties she was known for her work as President of the Military Road Civic Association, for her presence at the Covington Community Center watching her boys play ball and for the Falkenstein’s Bakery in Covington which she owned and operated from 1974 until 1984. After her retirement, she became known for her work with the hospital auxiliary at Highland Park Hospital and then with Lakeview Regional and the Surgery Center in Mandeville. She will be remembered as a strong woman with a devotion to her husband, her children and her community.
A memorial service will be held at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home 2260 West 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 3:00 PM visitation from 2:00 PM until service time.
