Even at a young age, it was obvious that Sam was a person of character and integrity. First and foremost was his wife and family. My sister-in-law Alvis, (Abbie's mother) was taken into his home early in his marriage and he cared for her as he would his own mother until her death at ninety-plus. That kindness takes a special sort of man.
In those early years, one of my favorite memories was when Sam, Abbie and Alvis came to visit when we were stationed at Fort Ord, California. They had hoped that we could all go to Disneyworld, about five hundred miles from where we lived. After traveling all night to get there, for the first time ever, the park was closed!
We still had a wonderful time during their visit and created memories that have lasted all these years.
I wish that my health would allow me to travel so I could be there to honor a great soul.
Abbie, you and the children are in my prayers during this difficult time. I pray that you will find peace and comfort knowing that Sam is no longer suffering and is with God. Much love, Aunt Darlina
