Russell Morris' Obituary
Russell “Rusty” Davenport Morris of Mandeville, LA passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late Robert L. Morris, III and Julia Davenport Morris of New Orleans and Pass Christian, MS. Beloved brother of Melinda Vining (Robert) of Metairie, LA and Robert L. Morris IV of Pass Christian, MS. He is also survived by his nephews Robert P. Vining (Rhonda) of Houston, TX and Paul R. Vining (Tania) of Covington, LA and several nieces and nephews, many beloved friends and a close friend Virginia Norton of Long Beach, MS.
He was born in New Orleans on August 7, 1948, attended New Orleans Academy, graduated from Sewanee Military Academy where he was a class officer, Captain of the track team, All MidSouth Conference Football, earned 8 varsity letters and was named Outstanding Cadet in the Class of 1966. He attended Tulane University and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a member of the football team. He served his country during the Vietnam War stationed in South Vietnam with top secret clearance as an intelligence specialist at the Military Advisory Command Headquarters. He received many awards including the Joint Service Commendation medal. After the war, he graduated from the Mississippi College School of Law. He joined the firm of McDavid and Edmonson in Jackson, MS for several years before returning to New Orleans to join the Title Abstract firm of Frawly, Wogan, Miller and Co. where he remained for several years before moving to Newport Beach, CA to work for Buttram Oil and Gas Properties. In 1990, he returned to New Orleans to become Land Manager at LLOG Exploration Co. and settled in Mandeville, LA. In 2000, he became president of Newport Resources, Inc. He was a member of Petroleum Landman’s Association and the American Association of Petroleum Landmen.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 S. New Hampshire St., Covington, LA 70433 on Sunday, April 18 at 2:00 PM.
Interment will be in Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian, MS at a later date.
