Opal Blanche Slemmons' Obituary
Opal Blanche Slemmons, 95, formerly of West Chester, Iowa, died at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Covington, Louisiana, on October 25, 2007.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa with internment in the West Chester Cemetery, West Chester, Iowa. Visitation will be held 6 - 8 pm Saturday, October 27 at Jones-Eden Funeral Home.
Opal was born February 12, 1912 in Lone Tree, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel Dexter and Minnie May (Cox) Miller. On March 24, 1934, Opal was united in marriage to Edgar Leech Slemmons, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She and Edgar farmed in the Iowa City and West Chester areas. Opal retired from the West Chester US Post Office in 1976. She was an active member of the West Chester United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She moved to Louisiana to reside with her daughter, Judy, in 1998.
Opal’s family includes her daughters, Mary Lou Fuller of Mascoutah, Illinois, Marjorie Mae (Larry) Rhutasel of Freeburg, Illinois, Judy B. (Ernest, Jr.) Gracia of Covington, Louisiana, and Nancy Jane (William) Stagner of Apex, North Carolina. She is survived by her grandchildren, Lance and Chad Rhutasel, Ryan, Kelly, and Justin Stagner, Tanya K. Powell, and Dana N. Robertson, and her five (5) great grandchildren, Logan and Zoe Rhutasel, Sabrina and Aiden Rhutasel, and Hailey Powell. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar, daughter, Lois Kay Sangster, a son, William, and a son-in-law, George D. Fuller. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, David Loraine Miller, Thomas Merdith Miller, Samuel Albert Miller, Ivan Elmer Miller, an infant brother, Gaylord Miller, and an infant sister, Mildred May Miller.
Memorials may be made to the West Chester United Methodist Church, West Chester, Iowa.
