Martin A. Simmons, Jr.'s Obituary
Martin A. Simmons, Jr. died on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Brunette Smith Simmons, his daughter, Babette Simmons Tanenbaum and her husband Jay Tanenbaum, and by one sister, Sara Katherine Simmons. He leaves two beloved grandchildren, Jill Cierny and Jason Tanenbaum. Mr. Simmons was the son of the late Minnie Dee Wells Simmons and Martin Arnold Simmons.
Mr. Simmons served the St. Tammany Parish Schools for 35 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the first principal of Mandeville Middle School. He will be remembered as an educator and mentor to thousands of students. After his retirement in 1990 he continued his work in education as an evaluator while pursuing his passion for golf.
Relatives and friends are invited to share memories with the family during a reception at Benedict’s Plantation, 1144 N. Causeway Blvd., Mandeville on Friday afternoon January 23, 2009 from 1:00 to 4:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mandeville Middle School.
