Martha Clarice Sheriff "Martie" Hammon's Obituary
Martha Clarice Sheriff “Martie” Hammon passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018 in Covington, LA. She was born on August 16, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late Edward Clifford Sheriff and Laura Anderson Sheriff.
Martie was married to her beloved husband, the late Gene Franklin Hammon. She was the loving mother of Ted Hammon (Sandy) residing in CO, David Hammon (Denese) residing in TX and Laura Hammon Beasley (Charles) residing in Mandeville, LA. Martie was the adoring grandmother of Elizabeth Hammon Immel (Christopher), Rebecca Hammon, Kacey Hammon Gideon (Christopher), Karla Hammon Walsh (Stephen), Leslie Beasley Smitley (Shawn), and Adam Beasley (Natalie). She was the proud great-grandmother of 7 great-grandchildren, Avery, Morgan, Corinne, Everett, Roman, Charlotte and Lucas. Martie is also survived by her life-long friend, confidant and sister-in-law Marcine Sheriff of Oklahoma City, OK. Along with her nieces and nephews whom she loved as if they were her own she is survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the beloved sister of the late, Col. Herman W. Sheriff (Anne), the late Don D. Sheriff (Ina), and the late Burt E. Sheriff (Marcine) whom she dearly loved and spoke proudly of as they were all armed forces veterans and a part of The Greatest Generation.
Martie was an accomplished pianist most of her life and anyone who knew her, enjoyed the gift of music that she shared. She also taught piano lessons and worked for the St. Tammany School Board at Mandeville High School as “the A.V. Lady” in the early to mid 1970’s. She was everybody’s friend because she never met a stranger. Although the early onset of Dementia and subsequent progression to Alzheimer’s disease slowly took most of her abilities away, Martie played the piano for her enjoyment and the enjoyment of others almost until the end of her life. Her endearing smile, gentle spirit, strong will and overall positive outlook on life along with her faith in Jesus Christ never disappeared. Martie was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Covington, LA.
