Larry was a man of many facets and talents. As other here have attested, he was a knowledgeable and talented mechanic, who used to enjoy restoring cars, especially Corvettes. He could fish, and shrimp and hunt, producing some delicious deer sausage. He loved good films, especially Westerns and WWII movies. When he retired, he spent many hours in his workshop crafting some amazing planes. He served his country in Vietnam with honour, something of which he was tremendously and rightfully proud. He truly deserves military honours. He was a loyal and respected friend to many. I am forever grateful to him for making my mother so happy and for looking after her so well, and especially for putting up with me throughout many stroppy years as a teenager and young adult. As I grew up, I also grew to respect, care for and value Larry. I will miss him. Rest in peace with God Larry – your memory will always be a blessing to those who knew you.
Anna and I were shocked when we got the news that Larry had passed away. I know my sister Betty is heartbroken as we all are over his loss. Over the years we always looked forward to Betty and Larry’s visits whether just a fun get-away or during a disaster like Hurricane Katrina. It was during Katrina that I really got to know my brother-in-law. Larry was genuine and honest and one of the most talented men I’ve ever met. Some of the RC Airplanes he built and flew were amazing and his knowledge of firearms and automobiles was second to none. Larry, you will be missed. I feel like I’ve lost another brother.
As a friend of Larry & Betty's daughter Mary, I met Larry after Katrina when myself and my husband Rick helped them relocate to Hammond. Rick and Larry hit it off since they were both in the Auto Body industry and while they told stories Betty and I would talk about Mary. Rick loved seeing all of Larry's planes as well and Rick was quite intrigued with the craftsmanship. Once Rick figured out they both knew David Hanemann, that just gave them more in common to talk about. Mary worried about Larry & Betty's adjustment after Katrina but I could always happily report that they were doing well and Larry was doing everything possible to make it a happy transition. Larry was a caring man. Although I didn't get to know him as well as I should have, it was quite easy to see that he was a man of impeccable character who loved his family and friends deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I want them to know they can call on me if there is anything Betty needs.
Larry and I have been best of friends for over 50 years. Although as youngsters and early teens we didn’t know each other living less than a mile away from each other. We both attended the same Junior High School as well as High School together even though we did not know each other until our early twenties where as two “Motorheads”(that’s car enthusiasts)we became fast friends with other neighborhood guys which turned into a lifelong friendship. Larry was very talented building his very own 20+ foot long boat used for trawling and the like. Larry was a very talented auto body repairman as well as painter. Larry worked in the auto body industry and even had two body shops of his own. Larry was also a craftsman in the field of model self propelled airplanes. There wasn’t much Larry couldn’t do with his hands and talents. We worked together for a number of years as Auto Damage Appraisers and also worked with each other in the field of Auto Collision Repairs. Larry is a Vietnam Army veteran who served his country well and loved it until the end. Larry was a devout Catholic and a loving husband to Betty, and loved both his brother now deceased and sister as well as his Nanny. One could not imagine there could have been a better man and friend to have had the honor to have been able to call him “Friend”. We will never forget Larry and who and what he was. Until we meet again my friend enjoy eternity in the arms of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And Amen!
