Dr. James Burke Dowling's Obituary
Dr. James Burke Dowling passed away peacefully at his home on May 6, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Jim was born on May 9, 1939 in Massillon, Oh. He earned his B.S. from John Carroll University, followed by his M.D. from Queens University. He arrived in New Orleans in 1968 and completed his surgical residency thru Tulane Medical School and their affiliated program at Charity Hospital where he was appointed Chief Resident in Surgery. Jim had a successful private General Surgery practice at both Mahorner Clinic and later with Dr. John Walsh, Jr. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Member of the Southern Surgical Society, a Founding Member of the Tulane Surgical Society and a Charter Member of the American Society of General Surgery. In addition, he is the former Chairman of the Department of Surgery at both Southern Baptist Hospital and St Jude Medical Center, a former President of the New Orleans Surgical Society and President and Executive Director of the Tulane Surgical Society.
He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. James Reginald Dowling. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Ann Dowling, his four children Carrie Brody (David), Beth Hunter (Joe), Michael Dowling, and Mark Dowling, his four grandchildren Sam & Owen Brody, and Michael & Celia Hunter, his two sisters Judy Piero (David) and Joan Pahlau, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, May 11, 2015 from 10am-12pm with a memorial mass at 12pm at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471. Burial will be private.
