The stories are endless. I could fill a book. Boone meant the world to me. He was unselfish with his knowledge. I would mostly sit and listen. "Know your cost. Bid your cost. Beat your cost." I applied this philosophy in all aspects of my life.
An unwritten rule in Boone’s Book of Truth for any contractor bidding a job: traffic laws don't apply. A U-Turn on a double full lane two-way traffic is not only necessary but also a must. A chain gate across a levee access road is just an invitation to go around it and drive the levee because "Bo, we are here to look at this job!" The cops somehow knew this, in his mind. Just contractors going to look at a job.
The last job we bid together, we looked at production hard. Boone always thought outside the box. He pulled out a book from 1901 that his grandfather used. We interpolated production numbers from "wheelbarrows of dirt" to CY of dirt pushed by today’s dozers. Lots of things were difficult on this job, but production was right on the money.
To say that I'm thankful is not enough. Boone is one of the men that helped shape many of us into what we are today. I will always remember, cherish, and use all the wisdom and truths that you shared with me. There is a saying that I hold dear: "Never underestimate the size of the hole that your absence will leave." The hole left by Boone’s passing is profound, felt deeply by all of us and his family. Rest in peace, Boone. You will never be forgotten.
