Gloria Hill Hopkins' Obituary
Gloria Hill Hopkins passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the age of 96 years old at her Covington home, where she lived happily for the past 25 years. She was born in Dallas, Texas, the only child of David Gatlin Hill and Judith Red Hill. Her family moved to New Orleans when she was 9 years old because her father became comptroller of the American Cotton Cooperation. Gloria graduated from Louise S. McGehee School and Newcomb College, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and met her future husband, George Denegre Hopkins. Family and friends affectionately called her husband by the nickname, "Doots." After Doots passed away, a cat named “Gracie,” was Gloria’s loyal companion for fifteen years.
Gloria is survived by her three children, George Denegre Hopkins, Jr. (Deborah), Judith Hopkins Seago (Robert) and Suzanne Hopkins Sura (Michael). She also leaves six grandchildren: Jeanne Hopkins Bendana (Richard), John McEnery Robertson, Jr. (Amy), George Denegre Hopkins, III, Walter Carroll Hopkins, Gloria Hopkins Sura and Michael A. Sura, Jr., as well as three great grandchildren, Ian Campbell Bendana, John McEnery Robertson, III and Bayne Hopkins Robertson. Her extended Seago family also included step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Gloria was renowned by all who knew her for her exceptional warmth, spirit, creativity and love of life and people. She actively participated in many organizations, including the Junior League of New Orleans, Le Petit Salon (past president), Orleans Club (board member), the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she was the past president of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association. She and Doots loved traveling, sailing and were honorary life members of the Southern Yacht Club. Gloria was also an avid bridge player, beginning with her lifelong friends, as they raised their children with whom she felt a special bond. As an artist, she enjoyed painting for clients, friends and her own pleasure. She also loved researching genealogy and passed on many fascinating stories about her predecessors to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gloria leaves behind many happy memories for her loved ones!
A private interment will be conducted at Metairie Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at Trinity Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 13, at 3:00 p.m. and to a reception immediately following the service at the home of John and Amy Robertson.
