George Joseph Franklin's Obituary
George J. Franklin, 86, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 in Baton Rouge, LA of Alzheimer’s disease.
He was the beloved husband of Ellen H. Franklin, and father of John and (Selva) Franklin, Kathleen Franklin, James and (Cherie) Franklin and Michael Franklin. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Franklin, one sister, Rosemarie Grive and two grandchildren, Andrea Franklin and Burak Franklin. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Hansen and his brother James Paul Franklin.
Mr. Franklin was a native of Lincoln, Nebraska and a resident of Covington, LA for 35 years.
He was a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Mineral Management Service, from 1962 to 2004. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1938, he worked as a newspaper reporter and copy editor for several newspapers in Nebraska. Mr. Franklin served in the U. S. Army Air Corps, during World War II. He received a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Nebraska, and earned both M.S. and PhD. Degrees in Geology from The Ohio State University. Mr. Franklin was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years . He served as District Chairman and later as Scoutmaster of Troop 85 in Mandeville, LA for ten years. He was awarded Boy Scouting’s highest honor for volunteer service , The Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville, LA.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Services on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA.
Visitation on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM followed by burial in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
