Fred N. Dykes' Obituary
Fred N. Dykes, known to his family as Poppa, died of cancer on March 15, 2006, at the age of 87. Loving husband of Alice Mary Clark Dykes who preceded him in death, Poppa is survived by his sons Jimmy and his wife Gwen of Mandeville, Mike and his wife Sharon of Dequeen, AR, Pat and his wife Ann of Covington, 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He graduated from Loyola University in 1939 and was a member of their last football team. After serving as a Navy pilot in World War II, Poppa flew for 33 years with Delta Air Lines and was one of the Delta Pioneers. In his later years with Delta, he served as head of Delta’s Professional Standards Committee. A resident of Covington for 56 years, he was recognized by the City of Covington in 2002 as the founder of Little League baseball. He was also one of the original founders of Covington Country Club and St. Paul High School’s Athletic Association. An avid sportsman, Poppa enjoyed fishing and hunting, but was known best for his golf game. Like he always said, “golf is the game that you can play until you die”. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend Funeral Services on Monday March 20, 2006 at 11:00 AM from St. Peter Catholic Church 128 E. 19th Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visitation on Monday at the church from 9:30 AM until service time. Interment in Pinecrest Memorial Garderns Covington, LA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Paul School 917 S. Jahncke Ave Covington, LA 70433 in memory of Fred N. Dykes. E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, Inc. Covington, LA in charge of arrangements.
