Elaine Brown Whelton's Obituary
Elaine Brown Whelton went to heaven on August 25, 2018, one year after the death of her husband of 60 years, Maurice Patrick (“Paddy”) Whelton. Elaine was born in Albany, New York on June 14, 1934, to Lilyan Rita Brown and James Morgan Brown. She attended high school and college in Albany and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Union College in 1955. Elaine raised five children, delighted in fourteen grandchildren, and charmed five great grandchildren. She was a devoted Catholic and as a daily communicant, she influenced her family in the ways of Grace. In retirement, she and Paddy set sail on their beloved “S/V Bleu” and enjoyed the Carribean Islands for more than five years. Elaine loved the children of the islands like her own; they flocked to the S/V Bleu when they saw it approaching shore, knowing that “Miss Elaine” would have stacks of books to share with them. “Nanny,” as she known to her grandchildren, passionately shared her love of books and often had a specially-selected book to share with each. Indeed, with books and so much more, Nanny was the epitome Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree.
Elaine is survived by her sister Audrey Hughes and her five children and their spouses: Michael and Patricia Whelton, Gregory and Jill Whelton, Denise and Carl DeFranco, Diane and John McCarthy, and Bridget and Paul Torregrosa. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister Phyllis Corcoran, and an infant son, Dennis Whelton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at St. Jane de Chantal Church, 72040 Maple St, Abita Springs, LA. Visitation and reception will precede the ceremony beginning at 11:00 am on the church campus in Fellowship Hall. After mass, celebrants will be guided in a procession to the Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, 2260 W 21st Ave, Covington, LA 70433 for a graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to either St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church or your own church may be made in honor of Elaine Whelton. You are welcome to share a memory or tribute a www.ejfieldingfh.com.
