Edgar Victor Schafer III's Obituary
Edgar Victor Schafer III stepped into His savior Jesus’ presence on the evening of October 12th, 2025. Edgar was a remarkable man, building meaningful connections with hundreds of people, young and old. He believed and lived by the truth that “life is all about relationships – relationship with Christ and relationship with others”. He had an extraordinary capacity for meaningful relationships. He was a student of life – a life-long learner who passed along what he learned.
Edgar lived intentionally, laughed heartily, smiled genuinely, empathized sincerely, exercised vigorously, hoped for heaven regularly, wondered at God’s creation, read voraciously, wrote continuously, prayed without ceasing, gave generously, listened intently, and loved with his whole heart.
He deeply loved his wife, Shella. He was an extraordinary father to Abel, Jolie, and Trevor. He loved them by loving their spouses and kids. He was a wonderful father-in-law to Sarah, Tim, and Julie. He was the best grandfather to Ellie (21), Paige (19), John Edgar (19), Schafer (17), Joshua (16), Stephen (16), Rhett (16), Charlie (15), Amelie (13), and Anna (13). He delighted in his 3 sisters - Suzanne, Connie, and Sharon. He loved his nieces and nephews – Michelle, Todd, Nic, & Stephanie and played significant roles in their lives and their family’s lives. He was a surrogate grandfather, father, & uncle to many.
Edgar was proud to be associated with Jesuit High School, Gilsbar Inc, Faith Presbyterian Church, the New Orleans Mission, and many local gyms.
His greatest accomplishment was leading so many of his family and friends into a relationship with Christ. He was the consummate mentor and spiritual influence.
Edgar anticipated being reunited with his father Edgar V. Schafer Jr., his mother Barbara Brown, his grandmother “Ma”, his mentor Carl Corbin, and many dear relatives and friends.
There will be a visitation at the Chapel at 1st Baptist Church Covington, 16054 Murphy Road, Covington, LA 70435 on Friday October 17th from 10-11am followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11am. The family will have a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Presbyterian Church.
E.J. Fielding Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. The Schafer family invites you to share thoughts, fondest memories, and condolences online at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home Guest Book at https://www.ejfieldingfh.com.
