Dorothy Tomlin Barnes' Obituary
Dorothy Tomlin Barnes passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at her home in Madisonville, LA. A resident of Gretna for most of her life, she was born on Tuesday, December 31, 1929 in Manchester, England to Gertrude Levine and William Tomlin and moved to New Orleans at the age of 18.
The beloved wife of the late Ralph E. Barnes, Sr., she is survived by her daughter - Gayle Barnes Somers (Gary M.); one son - Ralph E. Barnes, Jr.; one to whom she was like a mother - Barbara Treuil (George); five grandchildren - Geneva Matthews (Eric), Leah Stephens (Tyler), Gary A. Somers, Tiffany Ruiz (Alex) and Ralph E. Barnes III. She is also survived by five great grandchildren - Seraphina, Beatrix, Alex IV, Braelyn and Lennon. Her parents preceded her in death.
Dorothy spent her life loving and caring for her family. No one who met her ever forgot her. Known as “Granny” to everyone, she was, over the course of her life, a great cook, a green-thumbed gardener, a lively line-dancer, and a voracious reader. Above all she will be remembered as a faithful, loving disciple of Jesus. She was a constant example of one who lived by His commandment of love. The great joy of her later years was to be received as a convert into the Catholic Church, and she died as a grateful daughter of that Church.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Anselm Catholic Church, 306 St. Mary St. Madisonville, LA 70447.
Friends are welcome to join the family for food and fellowship immediately following committal services and interment at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington, LA.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to St. Anselm Catholic Church.
