Lt. Col. David Meade Johnson passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the age of 75. He was a resident of Mandeville for the past 13 years and had lived and worked in the New Orleans metro area since 1971. He was a retired Depu Read Obituary
Absolutely one of a kind. 'Montoya' could cheer up anybody anywhere no matter what was going on. There is no telling how many times we went to the Dog Track in Mobile (Theodore). The man knew how to have a good time. He was also greatly admired for his techinal expertise as an excellent navigator in the hurricanes. He will be missed and he will be remembered!!!

My friend Dave Johnson (Montoya to his flight crew mates) changed the world of Airborne Weather reconnaissance and Hurricane Hunting....he made it one hell of a lot more fun. What a positive attitude, what a sense of humor, what a guy. His basic philosophy was if you can't have a good time doing something, then it might not be worth doing. And Montoya enjoyed everything he did....in spades. Never met anyone else like him. Never will. In the Airline Pilot's Association (ALPA) magazine, atop the obits' column, is a tribute for fallen fliers and comrades: "To fly west, my friend, is a flight we all must take for a final check." Dave, or as we called him "Montoya", is the star of many of my Air Force Reserve stories. Without a doubt, the best navigator and a great guy. Always a smile on his face.
