Calvin Leopold Cognevich's Obituary
Calvin Leopold “Dode” Cognevich passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at home surrounded by family in Abita Springs, LA. He was born on July 13, 1926 in New Orleans, LA to the late Adam B. “Benny” Cognevich and Leona Levesque Cognevich.
Calvin was married to his beloved wife, Betty Sawyer Cognevich, for 16 years. He leaves behind five children, Calvin Cognevich (partner Floyd Cloutier) of Morgan City, LA, Richard Cognevich (Glynn) of Covington, LA, Clinton Cognevich of New Orleans, LA, Glenna Petersen (Mark) of Fresno, CA, and James Braud of Bakersfield, CA. Calvin leaves behind five grandchildren, Rachel C. Barletter (Mark) of Abita Springs, LA, Alicia Cognevich of Covington, LA, Patrick Gates and K.C. Gates of California, and Alexis King (Chaz) of Kathleen, GA, and ten great grandchildren, Stephen, Amber, Abby, Sebastian, Richard, Joseph, Brock, Lana, Kloe, and Kameron. He was the brother of J.C. Cognevich (Ann) of Slidell, LA and Doris Prejean (Joe) of Covington, LA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nora Alcorn Cognevich. The family would like to extend special thanks to Hospice of St. Tammany for their attention and loving care.
Calvin was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946 and served during World War II on the U.S.S. Charles Carroll. He retired as an electrical foreman at Avondale Shipyard after 27 years. Calvin served on the Abita Springs Town Council for four terms. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #12529. He served as Commander of V.F.W. Post 8720 and was a member of American Legion Post 16. He was a member of the Abita Springs Seniors Club. Calvin and his wife, Betty, were honored as Abita Springs 2010 Citizens of the Year. He was a long time parishioner and Eucharistic Minister of St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church, 72040 Maple St., Abita Springs, LA 70420, at 11:00 AM with Visitation from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow the service at the Abita Springs Cemetery, Abita Springs, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to V.F.W.
