Vivian McCollum Voelkel's Obituary
Vivian McCollum Voelkel passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016 in Covington, LA. She was born on June 14, 1921 in Hamlet, NC to Jessie Mae Robinson and Ira Faxton McCollum, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Henry W. Voelkel; one son - Mark A. Voelkel; her brother - Ira Faxton McCollum, Jr.; and two sisters - Jessie Mae Furr and June Kirby. She is survived by two devoted sons - Kenneth and Norman Voelkel; daughter-in-law - Pamela Fielding Voelkel; seven grandchildren - Heather Youngblood, Andrew, Dan and Sam Voelkel, Paysse, Scott and Kennon McWilliams; and 24 great-grandchildren.
First and foremost, Vivian was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved travelling, learning about new countries, and immensely enjoyed these experiences with her husband, Henry, and son, Mark. Vivian’s focus and determination enabled her to enjoy a variety of endeavors. Once Vivian set her sights on a goal, she diligently pursued it. As a young woman Vivian earned a pilot’s license; achieving this at a time when very few women held driver’s licenses. This was just one of many of Vivian’s accomplishments. She had multiple hobbies, and was continually active. She and her husband spent time gardening, raising some of the most beautiful African Violets in the State. Vivian was an avid Bridge player, volunteered for many years at Baptist Hospital directing patients and visitors, and also enjoyed years of square dancing. In 1977, Vivian began quilting. As one would expect from Vivian, she quickly became an expert quilter, quilting the well known “Louisiana Legend Quilt”, travelling throughout the US winning 1st Place at all competitive shows. Whether conquering the skies, cultivating her garden, performing a do-si-do on the dance floor, or spending quiet time enjoying old memories while making new memories with her family, Vivian was a remarkable woman of many talents as well as loving and caring to all those fortunate enough to call her wife, mother, grandmother or friend.
