Reverend Virgil Earl Nettles' Obituary
Reverend Virgil Earl Nettles passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Bertha (Bobbie) Gorman Nettles, his parents, Zola Hagan Nettles and Ulee Duncan Nettles, and his brother, Derl Lamar Nettles. He is survived by his two children, Linda Nettles Greene (Ferrell) and Donald Nettles (Beth Barker). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Todd Greene (Carla), Joshua Greene (Sheri), Megan Greene Fezio (John Mark), Michael Nettles (Robyn) and Bryan Nettles (Jennifer). He is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren Dewayne Sepcich, Justin Greene, Gabrielle Greene, Wyatt Greene, William Greene, Elizabeth Greene, Lawrence Greene, Locke Fezio, Lottie Fezio, Claire Nettles and Emma Nettles. He is also survived by his nieces Angela Nettles Anderson (Edwin) and Darnell Nettles Ragland and families.
Reverend Nettles was born in Brewster, FL on November 8, 1927. He attended the Church of God Bible Training School and began his ministry at age 19. He pastored over 50 years in Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, Illinois and Florida. He served in several other capacities during his ministry: District Overseer, District Youth Director, Youth Board, State Minister’s Council, Ministerial Exam Board, Ministerial Alliance and Retired Ministerial Association. In his retirement he continued to serve at Shepherd’s Care Ministries teaching Sunday School, visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and occasionally speaking at neighboring churches. His life was devoted to serving God and others.
He enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his great-grandchildren and family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Shepherd’s Care Ministries, 20115-LA-1081, Covington, LA 70435 on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 12:00 noon with visitation beginning at 10:30 AM until service time. Interment will follow the service in Barker-McManus Cemetery, 79407 Lee Road, Covington, LA 70435.
