I was deeply saddened to learn of Verline's death. Verline and I were in the same class at Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans from 1953-1956. We always kept in touch with each other annually following our graduation. The last time I spoke to her was earlier this year when I told her about my nursing memoirs penned (which she purchased) to generate scholarship funds for the Charity Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. I do recall visiting the huge home on Soniat Street with the beautiful antique furniture along with Angelina DeNicola LaScola.
For those three years at Charity, we witnessed the life and death of the indigent patients we cared for. We worked hard on wards overflowing with patients that were not air conditioned. We were part of a clique of friends: Verline, Angelina DeNicola, Lorraine Hebert , Tommye Crookes Halphen, Nell Domangue Colligan, Frances Ann Locascio Blanchard, Peggy Gueringer Tildon , Sylvia Fulton Busey, and me, Janet Foret Lococo.
There were hard times, but there were fun times too. Sadly, only Lorraine, Tommye, Nell, Sylvia, and myself remain.
And Fred, what a moving and truthful eulogy you delivered about your mom, my friend. Take care of your dad. And may Verline rest in the arms of the Lord.
