My beautiful stepmother, Susanna.
Lieve allemaal,
Lieve groetjes Lida Spierings- HOOGHIEMSTRA!
I am Suze's only Dutch relative in the US. She was my mother's youngest sister,
from a family of 7. Her two youngest brothers, Theo and Frans, are still alive.
Being the youngest girl, she was a single, working woman, remaining independent
longer than most women of her generation. In our close-knit family, she was
our coolest, most adventurous aunt. In the early 60's she even went on
vacation to the US with a girlfriend Truus. As expected of an executive
secretary, she spoke German, French and English, skills she maintained all
her life. Like her siblings, she loved to tell jokes and sing, and it was
always fun when she came to visit our family.
When I received a scholarship to study in the US, she helped pay
for my ticket to the US. I moved permanently to the US in the late 70's,
and after we moved to Santa Fe, we visited her regularly in Covington on our
trips to Louisiana, where our children got to know her too. Our last visit
was in October, and we spent time looking at old family photos.
We will miss her.

I am the eldest Dutch cousin of our beloved Tante Suze. I am writing this memorial message on behalf of my mother Cily Hooghiemstra and my two brothers Peter en Frans and my sister Susan.
We will always remember her as the most cheerful aunt and sister-in-law you can imagine. When we were young children she visited our parental home in Amsterdam many times together with tante Truus. We always looked forward to those visits, they were never dull.
When she moved to the US she and my mother kept in touch by phone. The last years became difficult for both of them. Unfortunately, they lost contact because their health declined.
Tante Suze will be in our thoughts.

English version
Suze was our beloved sister who was always very happy, cheerful and beautiful. We, her brothers, were always making jokes with her new "lovers" which she brought home to introduce.
The time we spend during our youth were happy times with all 7 brothers and sisters. Many memories are going through my mind but I remember her singing along with her favorite French Chansons, it sounded pretty good.
Later in life she would become the favorite aunt and sister in law who spend a lot of time with her nephews and nieces.
Then she found the real love and Adrian took her to the United States were she enjoyed the rest of her life.
We have beautiful memories of her visiting Amsterdam, all the family was gathered and all were talking about the good old times.
We visited Suze multiple times in Covington and we could always count on a warm welcome. We spent many hours in the enormous beautiful garden. She showed us around and we went on several sightseeing trips.
We stayed in contact by phone on a regular basis but the conversations were getting shorter each time and during Christmas we were not able to contact her at all. We realized after a week, after receiving a call of Hubert, that Suze was passed away.
We will miss the phone calls, but we are thankful for all the beautiful memories we shared. You will be missed but will never be forgotten.
Bye dear Suze, the last greeting from your brother Theo and your sister in law Marjan and the rest of the family in the Netherlands.
Our sincere condolences to the Lazarre family and our thoughts are with you and Suze during the ceremony on the 28th of January.
