Shirley A. O'Connell's Obituary
Shirley A. O’Connell, 87 of Covington, LA died on Friday, April 04, 2014. Born on Wednesday, July 07, 1926 in New Orleans, LA to the late Herbert J. Ahten and Lillian P. Ahten. Survived by her Daughters Kathleen Sertic and Ellen Clare Caldwell, and Son-in-law’s David and Ken. Grandchildren Rachael, Mathew, Nathan O’Connell of Colorado, Sarah Sertic, David and Daniel Caldwell of Virginia and Daughter-in-law Carbie O’Connell or Arizona. Shirley is also survived by her many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and 4 great grandchildren. She attended Newcomb College, and graduated from Regis College, Denver, CO and achieved her Master at Nichols State. She was an active participant in the American Legion/USO during WWII. She was an avid domestic and wild animal lover or anything her children brought home. She was in the forefront in developing early childhood assessments in education. Interests included genealogy, which led to her many patriotic clubs. DAR-Spirit of 76 & Bill of Rights, Daughters of 1812, P.E.O and Colonial Dames. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass on 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 08, 2014 at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 West 21st Avenue Covington, LA 70433. Visitation on Tuesday, April 08, 2014 from 12:00 PM until service time. Interment in Metairie Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Poor Clare’s Monastery, 720 Henry Clay, New Orleans, LA 70118.
