Shelby J. Higgins' Obituary
Shelby J. Higgins, affectionately known as “Silver”, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends on Saturday, April 29, 2006. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy Russell Higgins. Father of Kathy Dawn Higgins, Carliss Higgins Greagoff, and Colleen Higgins Hattaway. Father-in-law of Donald Greagoff and Michael Hattaway. Grandfather of Shelby K. Greagoff and Paul C. Greagoff. Son of the late F. Barton and Winifred Hart Higgins. Brother of the late Barton Higgins and Dorothy Bellis. Age 80 years; a native of Bartlesville, OK, he moved to Beaumont, TX in 1942. In 1943, he joined the Army Air force and served in World War II. Mr. Higgins proudly served his country as a ball turret gunner where he received numerous decorative medals and citations. Upon return he attended the University of Texas and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. He then met and married Dorothy Fay Russell. He and his wife then moved to Lafayette, LA in 1961 where they raised 3 girls. Mr. Higgins was a very active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Mr. Higgins was an avid gardener who enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. In 1974, he and his wife Dorothy moved to Texas. Upon retirement, they returned to Louisiana to enjoy their children and grandchildren. Silver touched many lives with his courageous spirit, his wonderful sense of humor, generosity and kindness. Adored by many, he will be truly missed. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for all the prayers and love extended by their friends and family. In keeping with his wishes his body was cremated. Donations may be made to Host for Hospice of St. Tammany, 1202 S. Tyler St., Covington, LA 70433.
