S.D. Carter, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. S. D. “Mitch” Carter Jr., 88, died Monday, June 4, 2007 after a brief illness. A private family graveside service will be held prior to a memorial worship service on Thursday, June 7 at 3:00, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Mandeville, Louisiana. Friends and family are invited to join the family after the service at a reception at the church.
Mitch was a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1936. He attended LSU where he was president of his SAE fraternity chapter and Captain of the Pershing Rifle Unit in its first year on campus. He graduated in 1940 with a degree from the College of Commerce. From 1941 until 1945 he served in the U. S. Army in Panama as a Captain and Company Commander. When he was discharged from the army he moved to Shreveport and established a food brokerage business with his father that he owned until he sold the business in 1977. He became a real estate broker with Dana Mason Realty Co, until he retired and moved to Mandeville, Louisiana in 1997. Mitch was active in the community, including serving as President of the South Shreveport Rotary Club, President of the Shreveport Area Food Brokers Association and President of the Shreveport Allied Food Club.
He was an active member and Elder of both First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport and New Covenant Presbyterian Church of Mandeville. He and Mary taught Sunday school and worked with children and youth in both churches, influencing many young lives.
Mitch enjoyed flying and obtained his commercial and instructor rating, and he enjoyed boating and water skiing with his family and friends.
Mitch is survived by Mary, his wife of 55 years, his daughter, Deenie Reese, and husband Dan Reese of Madisonville, Louisiana, and his son Larry Carter and wife Debbie of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Chris Carlson, Carter Reese, Shelley Elizabeth Reese and Michael Carter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Shelley D. and Vera Broadway Carter, and his son Tucker Carter.
The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Legacy Fund at New Covenant Presbyterian Church.
