I was privileged to serve as Stake Relief Society President when Scott Conlin was called as President of the New Orleans Stake in 2000. He was supportive of me and of the women in the stake. He always listened and counselled with spiritual depth to my thoughts and concerns. It was obvious that he was comfortable with strong women and sensitive to their needs. I credited Melanie, and was grateful to her for his sensitivity.
Many women in New Orleans struggled with poverty, abuse, single parenting, and the feeling that they had been abandoned. President Conlin’s love for those women was made evident to me during one stake conference.
I was asked to speak during the evening session; I read from 3 Nephi 22, showing Jesus Christ’s great mercy in the last days in gathering women who felt forsaken, grieved, shamed, abandoned. After the session was over, President Conlin told me how much he appreciated my comments. He had been watching the faces of women in the congregation with great concern, worrying about those who seemed downcast. During my comments, he saw many eyes tear up and faces soften.
Scott Conlin could be described as was Moroni in Alma 48 “…He was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ…and his heart did glory… in doing good, in preserving his people, in keeping the commandments of God, and resisting iniquity…
If all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto [Scott Conlin], behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the bdevil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
I am grateful for President Conlin’s example as a humble, willing Christ-like Church leader, husband, and father.
