Dr. Romeo "Romy" Hernandez's Obituary
Dr. Romeo “Romy” Hernandez, age 83, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 25, 2022 in Covington, LA. He was born on November 2, 1938 in Tiaong, Quezon, Philippines to Francisco Hernandez and Josefa Hernandez. He was the sixth of ten siblings.
He attended San Beda College, studied Pre-Medicine at Latran College in Manila and graduated medical school in 1963 from the University of Santo Tomas. After graduation, he decided to continue his post doctoral medical training in the United States where he did his internship and residency in general surgery in Connecticut, New York, Ohio and Michigan. He met his beloved wife Marietta “Meta” in Meriden, CT in 1964.
His medical career spanned 30 years as a General Surgeon and during that time he served as the Chief of Surgery, Emergency Room Director and Assistant Medical Director at Washington-St. Tammany Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa, LA. He and his wife were very involved in the formation of the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA) chapter in Louisiana/Gulf Coast, where he served as the Treasurer for many years. Upon retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, Russia and Antarctica and were accompanied on these adventures by their close friends. When they weren’t traveling, they split their time in retirement between their homes in Las Vegas, NV visiting with friends and family and in Louisiana to spend time with their grandchildren. He was a man of few words but had a quick wit, was extremely patient, kind and generous. He was the ‘Most Loved Doctor” by his patients.
Romy is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Juanita Liwag and Reynalda Salud and brothers Francisco Hernandez, Jr. and Nestor Hernandez. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Dr. Meta Hernandez, his two children: Ron Hernandez (Jennifer) and Lisa Pellegrini (Greg); by his 10 grandchildren: Christina Hernandez, Eric Hernandez, Alexander Hernandez, step-grandson Bruce Henley; Isabelle Pellegrini, Jack Pellegrini, Caroline Pellegrini, Max Pellegrini, Natalie Pellegrini and Gabby Pellegrini. He is also survived by his sisters Norma Sales, Perla Hernandez, Araceli Manas and Erlinda Salud and his brother Henry Hernandez.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend the Catholic Mass at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 West 21st Avenue, Covington, LA on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM until service time.
