Rod Downie is gone. I'm so very saddened to hear this. I remember him quite fondly, to say the least.
During the Ramsay years, Rod was a frequent participant in our afternoon tackle football games. It was here that I earned my only macho, sports-related, nickname. Of things athletic, I was burdened with neither speed, agility, nor quick thinking, however, I soon discovered I had a pretty good granny gear. This helped me to run over, if not thru, most tacklers, including the class bully.
How sweet it was. For one brief, shining moment, thanks to Roderick Laird Downie, I was "Tank". And, on the all too rare occasions our paths would cross, I'd be "Tank" again. Thanks, Rod, I hope you get this.

My deepest sympathy. My dad Tom Lindemann took us on family vacation to visit Rod and Ginger when I was a kid. Rod and my dad attended college together. Fond memories of the visit. Then Rod and Ginger were kind enough to open their home to me again during my college days so my girlfriend and I could experience Mardi Gras. Rod and the whole family made our trip memorable. Still remember the pet lizard. My mom and I send our prayers and love and wish we could be there.

To the family and friends of Roderick Downie, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to you for the loss of your beloved Roderick. May your days ahead be softened by memories of Roderick at their best. Unfortunately all of us suffer the pain that death brings. Even Jesus was brought to tears when his friend Lazarus died. (John 11:35). But just as he raised his dear friend from the dead, he has promised to do the same for all he wants. We too can have that hope of seeing our dead loved ones again by turning to the God who gave his Son for us. (John 3:16) He has promise to bring death and sadness to an end forever. Please read Rev 21:3-4

My favorite memory was when Rod explained how to identify a young oak tree. Looking at a very young seedling, his response was this: " It's still young, and doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up". I was fascinated by his take on many aspects of nature: Always fun just to walk int he woods and see it through his eyes!

Uncle Rod always made me feel welcome, and I have always loved him for that. I remember him with great fondness, and am glad his struggles are over.
