I have some fond memories from childhood at Gaines. Robert being the second oldest cousin and the most connected with Gaines was the leader in showing me around. I remember a particularly great time playing in the hay loft of the barn. Another time he intiated a tormenting of a cow that, being annnoyed with ous, began to give chase. I thought I was going to be trampled to death and only at the last minute was able to dive under a fence to escape.
Whether it was the season or an invasion there where these giant black grasshoppers and Robert introduced me to them. I still remember him saying as he was kneeling down playing with one, " these are called devil horses".
All boys of our age had an electric train set usually a Christmas gift. I was envious of Robert's because his locomotive made smoke come out the the chimney and mine didn't.
We last talked about a year ago. He was always the one to keep in touch with the aunts and uncles. He had just gone to see Dot and Roland. I remember he said Dot said he could have all the string beans he wanted but he had to pick them. He also sent me a ton of old photographs of my father, uncle Bobby and uncle Tommy as young boys.
He had me in tears about a story from Gaines. I didn't know he spent time alone with the grandparents there. Anyway he said that he would get on Grandpa Curran's nerves and grandpa would say " Ben (Ben Beechem one of the workers) take Robert fishing please.
I will miss him above all for his knowledge of the family and the stories of a past long gone but not forgotton.
