I remember my Godmother Rita Rase introducing me to the standard Monday New Orleans dish of red beans & rice. I always think of her when I enjoy that wonderful plate of beans.
It never mattered that Aunt Rita and her family lived so far away from us, we always looked forward to their trips to Detroit. It meant going to the zoo together, big picnics at various parks, and playing with our cousins that didn't sound like us.
Aunt Rita always kept up to date with all the happenings in the Fischer, Dillon, Oswell, and Quinlan families. She was truly interested in each one of us and always knew the right thing to say to her nieces and nephews.
When my Mom (Helen) was celebrating her 90th birthday, Aunt Rita came to celebrate with her. It was so wonderful to hear the conversations and laughter when those Dillon girls, Helen, Pat, Rita, and Babe, got together. All of them seemed just a little younger than their ages indicated. It must have been like that when they were growing up, poor Uncle Ray. He probably couldn't get a word in edgewise.
Aunt Rita, you may have been born in Detroit, but we all know you were a grand lady of the South. You spent most of your life there and you were the epitome of Southern charm. We will all miss you but we take comfort in the thought that you will be with your dear husband, your mother and father and all your siblings. Rest now, we love you.

Dear Noreen, Billy, Deby & Larry,
On behalf of my entire family, we extend our deepest sympathies to your family with the loss of your beloved mother. Your mother and father were dear friends of my parents (George & Dorothy Stokes) when you lived in Covington Country Club. Your mother and my mother played duplicate bridge at the Covington Country Club. I remember your precious mother with such fond memories, she was so thoughtful and kind and had a wonderful sweet smile, but most of all I remembered those beautiful blue eyes. She was such a friendly and happy lady who had a very full life. She had a long and blessed life to live until she was 97 years of age.
May your treasured memories of your beloved mother bring each of you peace and comfort at this time.
Thinking of you,
George-Ann & Robert Townsend in Atlanta, GA; George "Buddy" & Jeannie Stokes, in Mandeville, LA; Chris & Theresa Stokes in Mandeville, LA and Mike and Margaret (Peggy) Strange in Baton Rouge, LA
Dear Noreen, Billy & Larry,
Ms. Rita made it a point to sit and chat each time I came over to the house. Our conversations will be remembered and dearly missed. Very sweet lady.
