Richard "Rick" Sean Owens' Obituary
Richard “Rick” Sean Owens passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 20, 2025. He was 72 years young. Rick was born in New Orleans, LA, and was a resident of Metairie, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Owens, Sr. and Anna Clare Burke Owens, his siblings, John J. Owens, Jr., Judith Owens, Terry Owens, and Patricia Owens (as well as two fur children, Boo and Cher). He is survived by his loving (and favorite) daughter, Sarah Owens, his sister, Mary Owens Spiess (Bill), and his grandchildren, Rowan Durham and Reese Durham, as well as numerous family and friends.
Rick graduated from Rummel High School (1971) and Nicholls State University. While at Nicholls, he cherished his time with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. One of his most proud honors was being a founding and ever-long member of the Speckled Trout Club. Later in life, Rick worked at the family concrete business, Owens & Sons, Inc., which he later served as president. Since birth, he loved the water and was an active member of the New Orleans Yacht Club. He enjoyed Wednesday night races and especially the hamburgers and Budweiser’s that followed.
Yet, as a father, is where he shined. His love for his daughter, nieces, and nephews (including the furry ones) ran deeper than the waters he sailed. He parented with dad jokes, warmth, patience, and a strong belief that if you are on time, you’re late!
He will be missed greatly and honored every time someone lets their dog ride in the front seat, arrives somewhere 20 minutes early, or tells a timely dad joke.
If you ever see a sailboat on the water, give it a wave, as that is likely Rick heading off on his next adventure.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be Sunday, November 23, 2025 from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM at New Orleans Yacht Club 403 N. Roadway St, New Orleans, LA 70124. Parking is limited.
