RF or Jeff as we knew him was my Dad's (James Tanner) best friend. They went to high school together in Tomball, Texas. Jeff and Stella have always been in my family's life. I can remember stories from my Ma Maw and Pa Paw about how much they loved Jeff. He spent a lot of his young years at their house and was called a fourth son. When they graduated from high school, Jeff had decided to join the Navy and wanted Dad to come with him. Dad had gotten a scholarship to UT and decided he would go that route, but a small town boy at a big university just didn't work so he also joined the Navy. They didn't end up together, but certainly found each other after the war. They had both married the women of their dreams and would remain totally devoted the rest of their lives. They both ended up working for Exxon Mobil and shared work stories each time they got together. Stella and my Mother, Lena, became friends and Mother still cherishes a spice set given to her by Stella. Mother always loved looking at all the antiques that filled their home. Their later lives took them away from frequent visits, but phone calls and letters kept them in touch. Jeff and Daddy would go off to Tomball every reunion to see old friends until the number grew too small. Jeff told me a story about one night in high school when they snuck off to go see some girls in another town. He began to laugh and Daddy joined in. The story went no further, but the smiles on their faces and gleam in their eyes were of two best friends who had a great time that night and I am sure many more.
I lost Dad in 2009 and in his obituary, I referred to him as "gentle man and a gentleman". This fits Jeff as well and I will always remember my "gentlemen".
