Dennis and I (Dale) moved in to our home across the street from Dick and Mary 24 years ago here in Ventura. Shortly after we moved in Dick came over to introduce himself and offered to help in any way he could. He also told Dennis that before he went to buy a tool he needed, to check with him because he had 2 or 3 of them laying around in his garage; all we needed to do is figure out where in Dick's garage they were! It turns out he wasn't kidding. No matter which odd tool Dennis needed, Dick would find one in his garage.
Dick was the neighbor everyone wants. He was a gracious and giving man. He had so many talents and hobbies (and many good stories) that he connected with just about everyone. We shared our hobbies of gardening, rock collecting, jewelry making, fishing, & house repair. He also shared my name--his middle name is the same as my first, plus his birthday is 1 day before mine and he and Mary's wedding anniversary is 1 day before ours.
On Sundays, when Mary and he were not traveling, we'd wave to each other as we pulled out of our driveways heading to church. Dick was always dressed in his coat and tie, ready to usher at Missionary Church.
When Dick was home, his garage door was up. He wasn't one to sit still. He had many projects going plus his gardening. He was always ready to have visitors and jaw for a while. Mary said he'd talk to a fence post if no one was around for him to talk with. He had a wealth of information and stories to share. We loved his laugh and sense of humor.
Dick became a dearly loved friend to us and many more people here in Ventura. Our neighborhood was not the same after he moved to Mandeville. We knew it was the best decision for him to move, just hard to see him go. We are glad we kept in contact with him and we will surely miss him.
