Rene John Piegts' Obituary
Rene John Piegts passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, age 88, in Mandeville.
Son of the late Wilhelmina Luce Piegts and Maurice Rene Piegts, beloved husband of 41 years to the late Gloria Montegut Piegts, loving father of Jamie Piegts Hymel (Pat) and Renee Piegts Klos (Don), longtime companion of Anna Mae Lafont, grandfather of Katherine Klos, Rene Hymel (Nicole), Amanda Hymel Lenhard (Matt) and Patrick Anthony Hymel Jr. (Anna), great-grandfather of Edward, Jane, and Lauren Lenhard and Patrick Thomas Hymel.
Rene received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart in WWII with the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion, logging 300 days of combat.
Rene ran the Mirabeau Bell Grocery in New Orleans with his family before joining the Postal Service; he retired in 1984.
Rene set an example of service, generosity, and kindness for his family. He honored his responsibilities, served modestly, and enjoyed life.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 West Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471 at 11:00 AM with visitation at church on Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery #3 in New Orleans.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Mr. Piegts to be made to St. Michael’s Special School, 1522 Chippewa St, New Orleans, LA 70130.
