Judge Peter Garcia was a great man. Years ago (2015) I got myself into some trouble and Judge Garcia sentenced me to 2 years probation after reducing what was a felony to a misdemeanor. I was reluctant at the time. In my sentencing, I was to report to Anger Management classes every week for 13 weeks. In those 13 weeks I started to understand what it means to take responsibility for my own actions and feelings. I started to understand my role in all situations that lead up to that point. Out of concern for my mental health, Garcia also ordered me to go to counseling every week and to see a Psychiatrist once a month. He was the ONLY person other than God at the time that cared about my wellbeing. Throughout my 2 years on probation, I was also ordered to periodically check in with Judge Garcia in his courtroom. When I say periodically, I mean every 2 months and sometimes once a month depending on my progress. He was an authority figure that I learned to respect and love simply because he really did care about people, he cared about me and what my future was going to be. The last meeting I had with him was in the courtroom on my last day of probation. I had the opportunity to thank him and to tell him that he has no idea how much it meant to me that he pushed me to my limit and that I was forever changed because of him. The way he smiled and said thank you right back... I'll never forget it. Though I stumbled and fell years after that, his presence and authority in my life at that specific time truly did change me and helped prepare me into adulthood. #thedreamteam Love you always and forever & looking forward to seeing you on the other side ✝️️. Linda, I'm just seeing this about Peter. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. I'm coming up on two years since losing my husband. You won't know what anyone can do for you but I found that those who have suffered a loss will understand you better than anyone. With sadness we heard of Peters passing and know that St. Tammany Parish has lost a true friend. He was instrumental in helping our son through some tough times for all of us. One of our fondest memories of Peter and his brother Chris performed as Jake and Elwood of the Blues Bros. at a Jaycee function years ago. He and I compared our recovery from knee replacement several years ago on some of his Saturday morning walks. Our condolences go out to his family.

Judge Peter Garcia was a stellar example of leadership, integrity and warm good humor. He used his friendships and influence to help people, especially those no one else was looking out for. He was always generously focused on fixing what was wrong with the world and improving the institutions we rely upon to secure our way of life. Being co-counsel in a jury trial with him was one of the most enjoyable times of my practice--and we lost! In later years, it was a true joy to see him at work on the bench, always thinking first of others and forgetting himself, keeping things as light and congenial as possible, and showing us all the power of simply doing what’s right. Mickie and I extend our warmest regards to Linda and all his family and want to share our deep regret for their loss.
My first memory of Judge Peter Garcia was in the 90's. He came to a Homeschool meeting to listen to the board speak, one couple at a time. He was our guest. He must have been curious about homeschooling. So, because my husband was out of town, I sat a Ken Doll on the small table when it was my turn to speak, & explained that the Ken doll represented my husband. Last year I saw him in a break in the Justice Center hall. I asked him if he remembered that meeting. He replied jovially, " I don't remember what I had for breakfast this morning." That was funny. Afterward, I understood. I sat and listened to his case. He had sat from 8:30 A.M. until 4 P.M. listening to a case based on some Facebook evidence! I thought to myself, that would definitely make me forget what I had for breakfast!! He always had a sense of humor. Good man.
We were very saddened to hear of Peter’s passing. He was truly a good man. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Judge Garcia was a truly caring man and Judge. He worked hard helping to establish the Drug Court Program at the 22ND JDC and as one of its long time Judges, to help so many better their lives. As a former employee of that program, I saw first hand the impact he and that program had on the community. He would say “There but by the grace of God go I” and that set my daily thoughts on all clients. I thank him for the wisdom. Fair winds and following seas Judge Garcia. God bless his family.
