Born on January 28, 1931, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Peter was the only son of Joseph DiMaggio and Sarah Duca DiMaggio. For over 67 years, he was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Carolyn Staiger. He was a loving father to Dawn DiMaggio, Deanna Allen (Michael), David DiMaggio Sr. (Anna), and Dina Martinez. He was a proud grandfather to Sean Martinez, Meghan Martinez, Danielle DiMaggio, Mollie Hood (Thomas), Jared Allen, Shane Martinez (Chloe), David DiMaggio Jr., Jeremy Allen, and Caroline Allen, as well as six great-grandchildren. Peter was a man of devout Catholic faith with a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. He moved his family to Arabi, Louisiana, in 1961, where he became a founding member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister, Commentator, Lector, School Board Member, and chairperson and finance manager of the parish fair. He and Carolyn were co-recipients of the Order of Saint Louis Medallion from the Archdioceses of New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, he and Carolyn relocated to Mandeville and became parishioners of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
He was a 1950 graduate of St. Aloysius High School, served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. He was the internal comptroller for the Louisiana Coca-Cola Bottling Company for over 25 years, from which he retired in 1990 at the age of 59.
Peter was a Past Grand Knight of Janssen Council #3068 Knights of Columbus and a member of the 4th Degree. He loved sports and enjoyed playing softball with the Knights of Columbus “Over the Hill Gang.” He especially loved golf and was a proud member of the “Dawn Busters” at Bayou Oaks Golf Course before Hurricane Katrina and at Abita Country Club post-Katrina.
