Perry graduated from Fortier High School and attended LSU in Baton Rouge. At a young age, he learned to fly small planes at Lake Front Airport; he soon joined the Louisiana National Guard to fly fighter jets and also piloted aircraft for the power company. At the height of his career and for 27 years, Captain Barnes piloted national and international flights for Pan American Airlines.
