Ouida was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and grew up in both Philadelphia, Mississippi and Metairie, Louisiana. She graduated from Riverdale High School in 1969 where she met her high school sweetheart and then married at Memorial Baptist Church in 1970. She worked many years at Griff’s Young Fashions, where she adored helping children dress in fashionable attire. She also worked at New Concept Cleaners. To be closer to her immediate family, of which she is immensely proud, she moved to the Northshore with her husband and spent most of their life caring for them. She enjoyed working in her garden and especially loved flowers. Her home was often adorned with fresh-cut flowers from her personal, beautiful garden. Her favorite vacations were at the beach. Even though she enjoyed the sand in her toes and the roar of the waves crashing the surf, she loved her New Orleans Saints even more. Ouida was an avid Saints fan and religiously attended the football games in the Superdome for over 30 years. Her fascination with football stemmed from an early age when she thoroughly enjoyed watching with her father. The Saints team returning to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina and watching them win the NFC Championship game from her season ticket seats are two of her most cherished memories. Ouida enjoyed cooking and baking in her kitchen, also affectionately known as “the candy store”. With all of her glass jars filled with candies of every color to match the holiday seasons, few venues could dare compete. She was most noted for her chocolate pies, German chocolate cake, and chocolate chip pecan cookies, all made with love from scratch. Our greatest remembrance of her is her loving status as the caretaker. Not only did she love her babies, after many growing into adulthood, she additionally often cared for all the children in the family. Her big brown eyes, beautiful smile, and contagious laugh will forever be missed and remembered by all who love her.
