Oscar P. "Boots" Hoffman Jr.'s Obituary
Oscar P. “Boots” Hoffman Jr., at the age of 84 entered eternal rest on August 31, 2022. Boots was born on April 1, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Doris Parr Hoffman and Oscar P. Hoffman, Sr.
Boots is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Erna (nee Hofmann) and his three children, David (fiancé Deonne Zelden), Krista Carpenter (Tim) and Susan Bonnett Bourgeois (Mace). He was Pawpaw to Amanda Hoffman Duhe (Matt), Ryan Hoffman, Lauren Hoffman, Timothy Carpenter, Stephen Carpenter (Michelle), Murphy Carpenter (Hannah), Joshua Bonnett, Thomas Bourgeois and Emme Bourgeois. He also treasured his short time as a great-grandfather to Oakley and Nora.
Although an only child, he was Uncle Boots to dozens, and was the proud patriarch to a very extended clan whom he loved dearly.
An alumnus of the Fortier class of 1955, Boots then graduated from LSU in 1961 and served his country in the U.S. Army for several years. He later received his master’s degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. Though the bulk of his years were spent in New Orleans, Boot’s heart was in Pass Christian, Mississippi where he and Erna retired - fishing, golfing, and getting involved in their new community. Hurricane Katrina changed that plan and he lived out his years in Mandeville near his children and grandchildren.
Loving father to three, Boots was also a father figure to many. His long career at the YMCA provided him years of joy, mentoring countless young adults while growing the YMCA mission throughout the New Orleans region. He treasured his time and relationships built around his Y service, especially his role with the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
In addition to his YMCA years, Boots later served on the national staff of Volunteers of America where he was instrumental in leading fundraising efforts and spreading their mission of service throughout the United States.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend services on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at St. Timothy’s Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Drive in Mandeville, Louisiana at 11:30 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM until service time. Memories and storytelling, just as Boots would have wanted, will follow in the St. Timothy Fellowship Hall for anyone who would like to remain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the Northshore Community Foundation to support the many nonprofits that Boots loved and actively served. northshorefoundation.org/in-memoriam-boots.
E.J. Fielding Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Please sign the E.J. Fielding Funeral Home online Guest Book at www.ejfieldingfh.com.
