Millard Emile Matthew, Sr.'s Obituary
Millard Emile Matthew, Sr., retired social agency operations director and former realtor and owner of a local real estate company, died Tuesday, November 18, 2008, in Denham Springs, Louisiana, at the age of 86. Born in New Orleans on February 9, 1922, to Elizabeth Nicolay Matthew and John Emile Matthew, he was a resident of Metairie for 55 years and of Covington the past 31 years.
Beloved husband of the late Miriam Bogel Matthew, he is survived by five children, Suzanne L. Matthew, Millard E. Matthew, Jr., Peggy M. Good, Patricia M. Boatman and John E. Matthew, II., and eight grandchildren, Joshua Neil Matthew, Benjamin Bradley Matthew, Maxwell Alexander Good, Winston Oliver Good, Janet Lois Boatman, John Ewing Boatman, Jr., Amanda Lynne Matthew and Emily Anne Matthew. Brother of the late John J. Matthew and Frederick C. Matthew, he is survived by his sister, June M. Evans.
Mr. Matthew attended Beauregard Junior High and Warren Easton High in New Orleans, and graduated from Tulane University in 1946 with a degree in Political Science, being his family’s first college graduate. He was in the Navy ROTC at Tulane and went through Navy Flight training in Pensacola, Florida. He worked in his father’s paint business before becoming a realtor and starting a real estate business. He was owner of Metairie Realty Inc. He was later Executive Director of the Jefferson Parish Housing Authority and then Director for Kidney Foundation of Louisiana. His life’s work culminated when he became Director of Operations for the Jefferson Community Action Program, a social agency that included at the time such programs as Head Start and Meals on Wheels, where he worked for 15 years, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he volunteered to help run the St. Tammany District 12 Fire Department for several years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Covington, and of Metairie Lodge No. 444 F & AM.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Monday, November 24, 2008, at 2:00 PM from E.J. Fielding Funeral Home Inc., 2260 W. 21st. Ave., Covington, LA 70433, with visitation Monday from 12:00 noon until service time. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
