Merritt Stevens Bumpas' Obituary
Merritt Stevens Bumpas passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2023, at the age of 58 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by Billie Holden, his partner of 23 years, Matthew Revere (Jenifer), and Shawn Fitzmaurice (Daniel), and their children. He is also survived by his sister, Stacey Bumpas Hayden, brother-in-law, Rusty Hayden, and nephew, Robert Stevens Hayden.
Merritt was born in Jackson, MS on July 23, 1965, to the late Merritt Stevens Bumpas and Jean Hughes Bumpas. He attended St. Paul’s High School in Covington and earned his Bachelor's degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. Merritt lived briefly in Atlanta and Charlotte before moving home to Covington where he resided until his death. He nurtured his love for books while working at Barnes and Noble Bookstore as an Assistant Manager for many years. He met Billie and they shared a love for gardening, nature, movies, classic novels, and history.
He is also survived by his aunt, Jackie Hughes Meena, of Madison, MS, uncle, Andrew Gillespie Bumpas (Kayneil), of Mandeville, LA, Aunt aunt, Susie Magee Bumpas, of Metairie, LA, and cousins, Guy H. Bumpas IV (Hayley), and Lauch Meena, of St. Petersburg, FL.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the outstanding care provided by Ochsner Cancer Center and St. Tammany Hospital Hospice.
A private service and interment at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington were held on September 11, 2023.
