Merlyn "Lyn" Ida Collins Weixel's Obituary
Merlyn “Lyn” Ida Collins Weixel, age 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025, in St. Tammany Hospital. Lyn was born on March 31, 1946, and had a very fulfilling life professionally and personally. She was a graduate of her hometown of Camilla, Georgia from Mitchell County High School. Her passion for helping others sparked an interest in becoming a nurse after graduation. Lyn became a Registered Nurse from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. Additionally, she earned a BSN at Medical College in Augusta, Georgia. Nursing brought gratification to her as a caretaker in various hospitals and home health positions. Lyn also worked for Richlyn Builders, Inc. in the construction realm with her husband Richard C. Weixel, Jr. Their marriage and business partnership fostered success and brought happiness to many homeowners, as well as to themselves.
Lyn was a source of light and joy for all who knew her, and she was always willing to help others by sacrificing her time, as well as giving monetary gifts. Her deep faith was practiced in different religious sects, beginning as a Baptist, then Episcopalian, and lastly Christian (Non-denominational). Lyn participated in bible studies and had many pastor mentors to enrich her spiritual life. Her love of traveling on world-wide cruises and motorhome expeditions was her greatest pleasure. Her interests included playing her favorite slot machines at casinos, piano, cards, reading, sewing, cross-stitching, church choirs, car shows, Cruisin’ The Coast, and gathering with family and friends. Being a pet owner to her beloved Shi-Tzu dog YaYa brought her much love. Lyn was also part of a YaYa sisterhood with her high school friends.
Lyn was preceded in death by her parents Lewis Collins and Mary Louise Cripps Collins, as well as her brother David Collins. Richard C. Weixel, Jr., her cherished husband of thirty-eight years, also preceded Lyn in death. Richard was the love of her life, whom she met and married after leaving Georgia and relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana. She is survived by her loving stepchildren, Richard S. Weixel (Nicole) and Susan M. Weixel, whom she loved and raised as her own. Lyn always verbalized that the greatest gift Richard gave her was his family. Lyn is survived by her brother Embry Collins, sisters-in-law Carolyn W. Medley, Judy Weixel, Kay Collins, and Frances Collins, brother-in-law Leo Weixel, grandchildren Isaac Weixel, Madison Wolcott, Elijah Weixel, and Caleb Weixel. A special host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family members are also survived by Lyn.
A special thank you is extended to Kayten Genck, Lyn’s caretaker, who not only provided excellent care but also became a source of comfort and friendship. Kayten was devoted, patient, loving, and caring towards Lyn for two years. An additional sentiment of appreciation is offered to the medical staff, especially the nurses, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
