Mary Ann Dixon Gordon's Obituary
Mary Ann Dixon Gordon passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2023. She was born in Washington D. C. on August 23, 1934. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel Morris Gordon; parents Joseph Leo Dixon and Catherine Marie Beall Dixon; and siblings Virginia Dixon Flynn and Joseph Leo Dixon, Jr. She is also survived by her children, Deborah Marr and Sheryl Van Duym; her step-children, Claire Gordon Cullipher and Diane Gordon. She was the devoted grandmother of ten and great-grandmother of five. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful lifelong friends.
Mary Ann grew up on a tobacco farm in Southern Maryland. After high school, she married and stayed home for a few years to raise the children. Then she went on to get a job with Metropolitan Life Insurance, eventually working up to the title of Office Manager. A brief stint followed that career as she worked at a doctor's office.
Family was very important to Mary Ann, affectionately known as Nanna. She enjoyed cooking big family meals. And just as much, she enjoyed cooking a good meal for Sam who always gave her compliments. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren whether it be at home or on a trip. Over the years, she made family trips to Gatlinburg, TN., Ocean City, MD, and Disneyworld. Spoiling the grand-kids was one of her “hobbies”.
Mary Ann enjoyed gambling at the casinos with Sam and was teased about always being lucky. That luck followed her to Restoration Senior Living where she was lucky when playing Bingo with the other residents. She also enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean islands with Sam as well as square dancing. She loved playing card games or dominoes with friends and family. Mary Ann was also known for her love of shopping and decorating. She knew how to make a house a very comfortable home. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Gordon may be made to a cancer charity of choice. Mary Ann was extremely appreciative of the excellent care provided to her by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
A celebration of life will be private.
