Mary Sue Bales Edwards' Obituary
Mary Sue Bales Edwards passed away peacefully on 04/26/2023, at the age of 80. She was born in Shreveport, La on February 4th, 1943, to Mary Edna Bush Bales and James Wesley Bales.
Sue is survived by her husband Richard Edwards, her son Brent Edwards, her daughter-in-law Lindsay Edwards and her grandchildren, Parker Edwards, Lucy Edwards and Jane Edwards. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Molly McArthur Edwards.
Born in Shreveport, La, Sue was raised in Hammond, La. She attended Hammond High School and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a master’s degree in education. After graduating, she moved to Metairie, La with Richard, her husband. She began her teaching career at Destrehan High School. Afterward, she spent decades coaching and teaching at St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Metairie, La where she was the head tennis coach and assistant to many of the girl’s athletic teams. She retired in 2009. While the head tennis coach, she led her teams to five state championships. Sue was also the director of the St. Martin’s summer camp program for many years which thrived under her leadership. She will be best remembered by the love and compassion she showed each of her students, who considered her a friend and mentor more so than a teacher or coach.
After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren Parker, Lucy and Jane. She also loved playing bridge, reading and “pa-diddling” in her garden. Sue made friends wherever she went and will be missed by many. Her spirit and tender nature will remain in the many memories of her adoring husband, cherished family and friends until they meet her again.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date and time.
