Marshall Douglas Tycer Sr.'s Obituary
Marshall Douglas Tycer, Sr. was received by his heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 surrounded by his family in Greensburg, LA. He was born on November 27, 1922 in Amite, LA to the late Thomas Andrew and Inez Johnston Tycer.
Marshall is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Shirley Bush Tycer and two children, Marshall D. Tycer, Jr. and Janet T. Lee (Pevey). Marshall will be dearly missed by his three grandchildren, Thomas Pevey Lee, Jr. (Rebecca), Reuben Tycer Lee, and Shirley Elizabeth Lee and a great granddaughter, Caroline Elizabeth Lee. He was the brother of the late Marion T. Frohn, Alice T. Miller, Sara T. Naul, Helen T. Lewis, William Tycer, Elliot Tycer, Herndon Tycer, and Paul Tycer. Marshall is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Marshall’s mother died when he was 10. He attended early elementary school in Amite and then moved to Kentwood, LA to live with his Aunt Katie and Uncle Doc Morris. He graduated from Kentwood High School 1939. He attended LSU in Baton Rouge for two years.
He went to work for AT&T, then the largest company in the U.S. as a lineman for 25 cents an hour plus traveling expenses. He worked all over the southeastern states. When World War II began, he joined the Army Air Force. After his military service, he returned to work for the telephone company as a construction supervisor and was transferred to Covington, LA in 1950. Shortly after arriving in Covington, he met Shirley and they were married on May 2, 1954.
Marshall retired from BellSouth in 1985. After retirement, he refinished antique furniture and also did gardening. Marshall was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Covington where he served as a deacon, treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. He also organized the Royal Ambassadors in the church. Marshall was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America where he served as President for two terms.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Friday, July 25, 2014 at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA at 3:00 PM with Vistation from 1:00 PM until service time. Interment will follow the service at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Covington, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the name of Marshall Douglas Tycer, Sr. be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org, or First Baptist Church of Covington, (985) 892-2149.
