Margaret Lamont Griener's Obituary
Mrs. Margaret Lamont Griener died on 23 September 2017, at the Trace, in Covington, La., less than a month before her 99th birthday. She was born in Bayfield, Wisconsin, on 17 October 1918, the only child of the late Hector Lamont and the late Georgia Bell. She moved to New Orleans in 1935 with her mother after the tragic death of her father on 23 December 1934. It was in New Orleans that she took up flying, becoming only the 3rd woman commercial pilot in Louisiana and the youngest to receive her commercial license. She became a flying instructor and trained a number of young men for the military who became commercial pilots after WWII. She gave her future husband, the late George Griener, later a Captain for Eastern Airlines, his first flying lesson and the couple were married on St. Valentine’s Day, 1941. She was a resident of Covington for the past 63 years.
Mrs. Griener is survived by a daughter, Margaret Alexius Griener of Covington, and two sons, the Rev. George Edward Griener, Jr., S.J. of Berkeley, California, and John Lamont Griener of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She had six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons David Nicolas and Leon Francis Griener.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at St. Joseph Abbey, 75376 River Road, St. Benedict, LA 70457.
Interment alongside her husband and two deceased sons will take place at The Garden of Memories in Metairie, Louisiana on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph Abbey.
