Loyd Eugene Latham Sr.'s Obituary
“My life has been richly blessed! I’ve had the love of God, family support, and life’s necessities.”
Loyd Eugene “Dan” Latham, Sr. entered peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at the age of 94. He was born in Newport, Arkansas on November 22, 1925 to William Lambert Latham and Ethel Susan Barber. The family moved to Louisiana in the late ‘30s shortly after his mother died. They settled in the Hammond area. It is there that Dan met the love of his life, Edith Johnson, who predeceased him on August 11, 2016. They were blessed with a wonderful marriage that lasted over 70 years. Shortly after World War II began, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy Submarine Division. It was only in recent years that he shared with our family his memories about his service experiences. He was thrilled and took great pride in visiting the World War II Museum and being honored as a member of the Greatest Generation.
Dan was a well-respected builder in the Covington area for many years. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his bountiful crop of tomatoes with family and friends. The roses he grew for Edith were beautiful. He always had a “fix-it” project in progress in his workshop.
He leaves to cherish his memories his three children, Lloyd “Gene” Latham (Nancy), Kenneth Latham (Susan), and Elizabeth Ann Lala (Glenn). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Amanda Latham, Emily L. Aucoin (Barrett), Daniel Latham (Shiloh), Travas Lala (Becky), Justin Lala, and Kendall Lala (Maghan); and seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, his parents, a brother, and a sister.
The family is grateful for the many kind expressions of love and concern during this difficult time. We extend special thanks to the nurses and staff at Southeast Louisiana War Veteran’s Home for their care, comfort, and compassion during the 2 ½ years he resided there.
As per their wishes, Dan and Edith will be interred together in a private service at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Covington. A memorial service with family and friends will be held at a later date.
