Leon William Myers, age 94, a resident of Mandeville, LA for the past 68 years, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2022.
Leon is preceded in death by his beautiful, loving wife of 69 years, Mary Ellen Volz and his kind, sweet parents, William Louis Myers and Ethel Quave Myers.
Leon is survived by his three beautiful daughters, Barbara Ann Oakes (Ray Buckel), Sandra Lee Barrios (Larry) and Elaine Gerrie Myers (Joe Monti). He leaves behind five grieving grandchildren, William Oakes, Krystal Goodman (Jimmy), Leonette Loe (Jason), Stephen O’Rourke and Elaine “Lainie” Monti as well as five great grandchildren, Victoria Impastato, Chloe Loe, Lanna O’Rourke, Michael Vigil and Stella Goodman. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Anthony “Tony” Manalla, Jr. (Linda) and their children, Maria Sirchia, Lisa Quintana and Gina Hattier along with host of great nieces and nephews.
Leon was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. He served in Germany during the Occupation as a medic. He worked hard his entire life. He was a pipefitter welder for Equitable, Higgins, Avondale Shipyard, Ecko in Big Branch and the refineries in Chalmette. He was also a licensed plumber with the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #60 in New Orleans.
Leon grew up on a strawberry farm in Madisonville. He married his wife at St. Anselm’s and moved to New Orleans. He then moved his family to Mandeville where he built their first home on Jefferson Street. As the family grew, he built their second home on Gerard Street. He built his final home on Dupard Street. He spent time with Father John LeBlanc welding swing sets, monkey bars and jungle gyms for the kids to play on at Our Lady of the Lake. His three daughters and granddaughter enjoyed swinging on these swings while attending school there. Leon loved his family and always wanted to be surrounded by them. He enjoyed gardening, working in his greenhouse and building woodwork projects. Leon loved animals and frequently rescued injured animals.
He was a quiet, simple, good country person and taught his daughters to be humble, love God and never lose their roots. He led by example. He was a great Dad and will be missed until we are together again in heaven.
